I work in tech, is there an opportunity for me?

Yes, companies within the space ecosystem require experienced tech professionals with backgrounds in software and business.

For context, the development and innovation across space technology stacks follows a similar evolution to internet, cloud, and blockchain stacks. Early on, companies build the full stack in-house; there is no specialization; businesses are expensive to start and hard to scale, and innovation remains limited. Over time, specialization and economies of scale help reduce upfront costs, centralized resources are designed to scale, and low-cost experimentation and innovation flourishes.

Space is undergoing this rapid transformation across Launch, Communications, Earth Observation and Position/Navigation, and there are opportunities across the stacks depending on your skills and interests.

Infrastructure/Data: If you are hardware-focused, there are opportunities to get involved at the infrastructure/data layer. Companies that operate here have a close physical proximity to space and include rockets, satellites, sensors, and radars. Examples of companies include Ursa Major Technologies, ICEYE, Oxford Space Systems, and LeoLabs.

Middleware: If your expertise is integrating hardware and software, building scalable distribution, and making information more accessible, then you should consider companies developing middleware. Examples of companies in this area include MapBox, SkyWatch, Picterra, and Isotropic Systems.

Applications: If your talent is manipulating data and building software solutions for specific industries and use-cases, there is an exponential opportunity waiting for you here. From location-based services to global internet, and persistent monitoring of the Earth, the only limit to the number of applications is your creativity. Examples of companies include ADWAY, EarthAI, FluroSat, and Radar.

Space-based technologies are the building blocks of many companies, not just traditional space companies focused on satellites and launch. The Space Talent Job Board recognizes the broad spectrum of opportunities and provides access to this great range of careers for jobseekers.
